Marathon Champion Who Became MP for Two Constituencies Dies in Eldoret
Former Chesumei Member of Parliament Elijah Kiptarbei Lagat, who represented both Emgwen and Chesumei constituencies during his political career, has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Eldoret.
Until his death, Lagat served as a board member of the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse Authority (NACADA).
Lagat’s political journey began in 2007 when he was elected to Parliament through the ODM ticket, representing Emgwen Constituency.
Following the division of Emgwen into two constituencies, he successfully contested for the newly created Chesumei Constituency in 2013 under the Jubilee Party, becoming its first elected legislator.
Beyond politics, Lagat was a celebrated athlete. Born on 19 June 1966, he rose to international fame after winning the 104th edition of the Boston Marathon in 2000, a feat that brought pride to Kenya’s athletics history.
News of his passing has been met with sadness among family, friends, and the wider public. Gwiji Dijital News conveys heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, and friends during this difficult time.
