| Tito Kiprotich behind his shop |
A middle-aged businessman identified as Tito Kiprotich was found dead in a swamp in Chebole within Kipsonoi Ward, Bomet County, after five days of searching by his family and neighbours.
The discovery brought an abrupt end to a period of uncertainty that began the night he closed his shop at about 9:30 pm and failed to return home. Residents who had joined the search efforts came upon the body early in the morning and alerted the authorities.
The scene showed his hands tied and clear marks that suggested he had been tortured before his death.
Police officers arrived shortly after the alarm was raised and secured the area while gathering early accounts from the community.
Bomet county commander of police Edward Ilwaga has confirmed that three suspects namely Gilbert Kipngeno, Angela Cherono and Brian Kimutai have been arrested in connection with the incident. The three have been locked in Sotik Police Station as investigations continue.
The police have not given further information on the suspects' role, explaining that the investigation is still in progress.
Members of Tito’s family said the past week had been marked by worry, prayers and long searches in nearby villages and farms.
They described him as a hardworking man who ran his shop and an Mpesa with dedication and had no known disputes that might explain the attack.
Police officers stated that the motive for the killing is not yet known. They indicated that detectives are examining the events of the last evening Tito was seen alive, as well as his recent movements and interactions.
The officers assured the public that all leads will be pursued until the circumstances surrounding his death are established and those responsible are brought to account.
