A 27-year-old mother of three from Gacharage village in Kuresoi North, Nakuru County, has been arrested after violently assaulting her six-year-old child over a minor household task.
The woman is accused of injuring the child after the young girl allegedly failed to peel potatoes as instructed.
Local authorities reported that the incident triggered immediate concern among neighbours who heard the child crying and alerted community leaders. The matter was quickly escalated to the police, leading to the woman’s arrest.
The suspect is currently being held at Sachoran Police Station as investigations continue. Officers say the child sustained injuries consistent with physical assault and is receiving medical attention.
Welfare officials have also stepped in to assess the condition of the other two children and determine the safety of the home environment.
Police say they are treating the case as a serious offense, noting that no form of physical harm toward a child can be justified, regardless of the circumstances.
They added that the investigation will help determine whether the woman has a history of violence or whether this was an isolated incident.
The Directorate of Children Services is expected to work alongside the police to ensure the children receive appropriate protection and support during the legal process.
Authorities emphasized that the welfare and safety of the minors will take priority as the case proceeds.
The suspect is expected to face charges related to child assault and cruelty once the investigation is completed.
Police have also urged residents to report any case of child abuse immediately, stressing that early intervention can prevent further harm.
This disturbing incident has sparked conversations in the community about the rising cases of domestic violence and child abuse, with leaders calling for more awareness, counselling, and support for vulnerable families.
