The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed the identity of a key suspect in the shocking murder of a 9-year-old girl whose body was recovered from a pit latrine in Kianjathi village, Mathira West.
The case has drawn national attention and renewed concern about child safety within residential communities.
According to investigators, the victim, Shantel Waruguru Kagema, was reported missing on February 8, 2026, after she disappeared from her home under unclear circumstances.
Detectives say her parents had left earlier that morning at around 8:00 a.m., leaving Shantel in the house with her 4-year-old sister. When they returned at about 6:30 p.m., they discovered she was missing and immediately raised the alarm with local authorities.
Police officers and local residents launched a search that extended into the surrounding area. During the operation, officers discovered items believed to belong to the child — including undergarments and shoes — placed on an old blue mattress inside an abandoned house nearby.
Shantel’s mother positively identified the items. Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers documented the location and collected the materials as exhibits to support forensic analysis and preserve the integrity of the evidence chain.
DCI says intelligence gathered from the scene and community leads quickly pointed investigators toward a nearby resident, identified as Peter Njuguna. Detectives tracked him down and placed him under arrest.
During questioning, the suspect allegedly led officers to his homestead, where Shantel’s body was later recovered from a pit latrine. The recovery operation involved both detectives and members of the public, after which the body was moved to a mortuary for preservation and a postmortem examination.
Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that on the day Shantel disappeared, the suspect allegedly approached the younger sibling and gave her Sh10 to go buy sweets, temporarily sending her away. Detectives believe this created an opportunity for the suspect to remain alone with the older child.
Authorities state that a serious crime was committed before the body was concealed in the latrine. Investigators are still compiling forensic, medical, and witness evidence to complete the case file.
The suspect has since been presented before a court, where detectives obtained a 21-day custodial order to allow more time for comprehensive investigations.
During this period, officers will finalize forensic reports, record additional witness statements, and prepare formal charges based on the evidence gathered.
The DCI has emphasized that naming and presenting the suspect is part of maintaining transparency in serious criminal cases, while also reminding the public that the judicial process will determine guilt or innocence.
Officials urged the public to avoid speculation or interference that could compromise the case.
In a statement following the arrest, the DCI reiterated its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable members of society. Investigators described the case as a grave violation that affects not only one family but the broader community.
They added that specialized units are continuing to strengthen rapid response and intelligence-led policing in cases involving missing children.
Authorities are also calling on members of the public to continue sharing information that may help prevent similar incidents.
Anyone with relevant tips is encouraged to report through the DCI toll-free number 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000. Anonymous reporting is allowed.
The investigation remains active as detectives work to ensure a complete, evidence-based prosecution.
