A man has surrendered to police and confessed to killing his wife following a domestic dispute at their matrimonial home in Bungoma County, according to law enforcement authorities.
The suspect presented himself at a police station in a different county, triggering a cross-county investigation into the incident.
Police reports indicate that the man walked into a station in Busia, more than 100 kilometres from the alleged crime scene, and informed officers that he had killed his 25-year-old wife, identified as Metrine Wandera.
Authorities say the suspect claimed the incident followed a confrontation at their home on February 11, 2026, involving allegations of an intimate relationship dispute.
According to preliminary statements recorded by officers, the suspect alleged he found his wife with another man at their residence.
The second man reportedly fled the scene and has not yet been arrested. Investigators have not confirmed that part of the suspect’s account and say it remains under active verification.
After receiving the confession, officers in Busia immediately took the man into custody.
Standard intake and holding procedures were conducted as detectives began coordinating with counterparts in Bungoma to piece together the timeline and circumstances surrounding the death.
Police say the suspect told them he left the scene shortly after the incident out of fear of retaliation from members of the public.
Such fears are common in serious domestic crime cases, especially in rural areas where community response can escalate quickly.
However, authorities emphasized that claims made by the suspect are not treated as established fact until supported by forensic and witness evidence.
The suspect was later transferred back to Bungoma County, where the case is officially being handled. Western regional police commander Issa Mohamud confirmed the transfer and stated that detectives are continuing with interviews, scene analysis, and documentation ahead of the suspect’s arraignment in court.
An autopsy on the woman’s body was scheduled as part of the investigation process. Police say the post-mortem examination will help determine the exact cause of death and clarify details that may either support or contradict the suspect’s statement.
Forensic findings are expected to play a central role in the charging decision and court proceedings.
Investigators are also working to locate and question the unidentified man who allegedly escaped from the scene.
Officers say he is considered an important witness and possibly a person of interest, depending on what evidence shows about his presence and involvement before or during the incident.
Domestic-related homicide cases continue to present major investigative and social challenges for police across the country.
Officers note that many such incidents are preceded by unresolved conflict, jealousy disputes, or prior reports of domestic disturbance, though in this case, authorities have not yet confirmed whether there had been earlier complaints involving the couple.
Police have urged the public not to spread unverified claims or social media rumors about the case, warning that misinformation can interfere with witness cooperation and fair trial rights. They also cautioned against any attempt at mob action, stressing that criminal matters must be handled strictly through the justice system.
The suspect remains in custody pending formal charges. Prosecutors are expected to review the investigation file once detectives complete the initial evidence collection phase. Possible charges will depend on autopsy results, forensic reports, and corroborated witness testimony.
Authorities say further updates will be issued after arraignment and once key forensic results are available..
