Edwin Sifuna has broken his silence after ODM removed him from the position of Secretary General, saying he has received overwhelming public support and will address the media to respond to concerns.
In a brief statement shared after his ouster, Sifuna thanked supporters for standing with him and confirmed plans to speak publicly. He said the volume of messages he received showed strong encouragement from his backers across the country.
“Following yesterday’s events, I have been overwhelmed by the messages of support and encouragement. I will speak to the press this morning to address some of your concerns. Ahsanteni sana. God bless,” Sifuna said.
ODM’s National Executive Council removed Sifuna from the Secretary General role during a meeting held in Mombasa. Party leaders said the council acted after deliberating on discipline and leadership conduct within senior ranks. The decision took effect immediately and triggered sharp reactions inside and outside the party.
The party named Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo as acting Secretary General after the decision. She now takes charge of the secretariat as ODM prepares for its upcoming National Delegates Convention scheduled for March.
Sifuna, who also serves as Nairobi Senator, skipped the NEC meeting where members passed the resolution. His absence, along with that of Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, drew attention and fueled speculation before the announcement.
Several ODM leaders have expressed divided views over the move. Some members support the NEC decision and call it necessary for party order. Others see the action as politically timed and potentially divisive ahead of key party decisions.
Sifuna has often taken strong public positions on party direction and national politics. His remarks sometimes placed him at odds with sections of the party leadership. His upcoming press address now carries weight as supporters and critics wait to hear his detailed response.
Party supporters and political observers expect his statement to shape the next phase of the internal ODM debate.
