The Jubilee Party has appointed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i as its Deputy Party Leader and endorsed him as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
The decision was reached during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, October 30, and chaired virtually by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Confirming the development, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni said the NEC had unanimously approved Dr. Matiang’i’s application to represent the party in the next presidential race.
Kioni stated that the decision marks a new chapter for Jubilee as it seeks to re-establish itself as a strong political force ahead of the 2027 polls.
Kioni said the council had received and formally accepted Dr. Matiang’i’s application for his presidential bid, noting that the NEC had agreed he would carry the party’s flag.
He added that the move reflects Jubilee’s confidence in Matiang’i’s leadership qualities and commitment to public service.
The endorsement comes months after Kioni revealed that the party was considering backing the former Interior CS for the top seat.
Dr. Matiang’i, who previously served in several key ministries under former President Kenyatta’s administration, is expected to spearhead Jubilee’s political comeback under the United Opposition alliance.
Kioni noted that the party believes Matiang’i embodies the values of discipline, integrity, and effective leadership that the Jubilee Party aims to restore in Kenya’s governance.
He said the former CS has a proven track record of performance and accountability in public service, which aligns with the party’s renewed vision.
Dr. Matiang’i expressed his gratitude to the party leadership for the confidence shown in him, pledging to uphold Jubilee’s vision of national unity and accountable leadership.
He said he was humbled by the trust placed in him and promised to work with all Kenyans to build a country where leadership is centered on service and fairness to all.
The appointment also marks a renewed partnership between Matiang’i and former President Kenyatta, signaling Jubilee’s efforts to reorganize and strengthen its position within the opposition ahead of the 2027 polls.
Dr. Matiang’i’s endorsement positions him as one of the key opposition figures expected to challenge President William Ruto in the next General Election, as political realignments continue to shape Kenya’s political landscape.
