A roads engineer based in Kisumu on Thursday morning died after allegedly jumping from the second floor of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices located at the Lake Basin Mall.
According to police and eyewitness reports, the engineer arrived at the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) Mall, where KRA has its offices, and parked his car at the mall’s parking lot. Before entering the building, he reportedly handed over his car keys to a security guard, instructing that his son would come later to collect the vehicle.
“The man parked his car and later came back, handed over the car key, and told us his son would come to pick up the vehicle,” said one of the guards manning the entrance.
Moments after entering the building, the man allegedly jumped from the second floor, landing on the ground floor and dying on the spot. Security personnel immediately alerted the police, who arrived at the scene and moved the body to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation and postmortem examination.

Unverified reports indicate that the deceased had recently been served with a KSh300 million tax demand by the Kenya Revenue Authority. Authorities, however, have not yet confirmed whether the alleged tax dispute was directly connected to the incident.
In a statement issued later in the day, the KRA confirmed that the incident occurred within its premises and that the man succumbed after jumping from the second floor. The Authority expressed deep regret over the tragedy and sent condolences to the bereaved family and friends.
“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) wishes to confirm that an unfortunate incident occurred today, Thursday, 30th October, 2025, at the KRA offices located at the Lake Basin Mall in Kisumu. A middle-aged man jumped from the second floor of the building, sustained serious injuries, and succumbed,” read the KRA statement.
The tax agency said the matter had been reported to the relevant authorities and that investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities, and investigations are currently underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. KRA is fully cooperating with law enforcement officers to facilitate the ongoing investigations,” the statement added.
KRA also reminded taxpayers and members of the public to use official communication channels when seeking assistance or reporting issues related to taxation.
“KRA further wishes to remind all taxpayers and members of the public that any incidents, concerns, or suspicious activities can be reported through the nearest Tax Service Office, or by sending information via the KRA iWhistle platform.”

The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Shared Services.
Police have opened an investigation to determine the motive behind the incident. Meanwhile, the body remains at the Kisumu hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem as authorities work to notify and support the family of the deceased.
Meanwhile Kenyans have ganged up with different opinions about the tax system in Kenya. They questioned the alleged accumulation of tax upto 300 Million. From most point of view this is just one case in many. They have further asked for accountability and the matter to be fully investigated.
