Detectives have arrested the main suspect linked to the killing of a 17-year-old Form Four student in Trans Nzoia County following a cross-border operation.
Authorities said the arrest followed days of investigations and intelligence tracking after the incident shocked residents of Kiptogot location.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the student was killed on the morning of January 30, 2026, in the Mowlem area.
Officers identified the suspect as Mike Wabwire Semera, who was tracked and arrested near the Kenya–Uganda Suam border after allegedly fleeing the country.
Police said the alarm was raised by members of the public who reported a body lying in a nearby farm. Officers from Endebess Police Station responded quickly and secured the scene.
The body was found about 700 metres from the girl’s mother’s home.
Crime scene officers documented the area before moving the body to Kijana Wamalwa Referral Hospital for preservation and postmortem examination.
Investigators reconstructed the student’s last known movements and established that she had left home at about 5:45 a.m. heading to school, which is less than a kilometre away. She did not arrive. Her body was later discovered at around 6:30 a.m. by fellow students on their way to class.
DCI said detectives followed intelligence leads that suggested the suspect had escaped across the border shortly after the incident.
Kenyan officers worked with Ugandan security agencies in a joint operation that led to his arrest. He was then returned to Kenya for further processing.
The suspect is currently being held at Endebess Police Station and is expected to be presented in court as investigations continue. Detectives say they are still working to establish the motive behind the killing.
In a separate operation mentioned by DCI, detectives recently arrested another murder suspect in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area.
During that operation, officers recovered a pistol, ammunition, and items believed to be stolen, including a motorcycle.
Authorities said the suspect in that case is also being processed as investigations continue.
