Litein Boys High School in Kericho County has been closed indefinitely following a night of unrest that left authorities and parents deeply concerned. The disturbance, which occurred on Sunday night, saw students attempt to break into a neighboring girls’ school, prompting swift intervention by police.
Kericho West OCPD Benedict Chirchir confirmed the incident, stating that the learners had become unruly within the compound before marching toward the nearby girls’ institution. Security officers were quickly dispatched to the scene, managing to disperse the students and restore order before the situation could spiral out of control.
The decision to shut down the school was reached after consultations between education officials, security authorities, and the school administration. Parents were advised to pick up their children on Monday morning, while police maintained a visible presence around the school to prevent further flare-ups.
This marks the second time in just over a week that Litein Boys has faced unrest. Barely ten days earlier, students staged a protest over allegations of undercooked food being served in the school kitchen. The recurrence of such incidents has drawn concern from both education stakeholders and local leaders, who have urged students to resolve grievances through dialogue rather than destructive behavior.
Speaking after the closure, officials stressed that continued indiscipline could jeopardize the learners’ academic progress and tarnish the reputation of one of the region’s prominent institutions. Investigations are underway to establish the immediate causes of the Sunday night chaos, and disciplinary action is expected against those directly involved in the attempted break-in.
The Ministry of Education has assured parents that measures will be taken to address the grievances raised by students while also ensuring that discipline and safety remain paramount. The school will remain closed until a sustainable solution is agreed upon, leaving the fate of the academic calendar uncertain.
