Police officers were dispatched to Tengecha Boys High School in Kericho County after students allegedly set one of their dormitories ablaze.
The incident occurred only hours after unrest at the neighboring Litein Boys High School, where learners destroyed school property and disrupted normal activities.
According to preliminary reports, the fire at Tengecha Boys broke out late in the evening, engulfing one of the dormitories where students had kept their belongings. Quick intervention by teachers and security personnel ensured that no casualties were reported.
However, a significant amount of property was lost in the blaze, including personal effects, bedding, and books. Firefighters from Kericho County later arrived to contain the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to other buildings within the school compound.
The timing of the incident has raised concern among education officials and security agencies, coming shortly after Litein Boys students were linked to widespread destruction of school facilities.
Eight students from Litein are currently in police custody as investigations continue, and authorities fear that the unrest could be spilling over to other institutions in the area.
Kericho County Director of Education and local administrators have condemned the acts, urging students to exercise restraint and resolve their grievances through dialogue rather than violence.
Police have since mounted patrols around schools within the region to deter further unrest.
Parents and guardians have also been urged to counsel their children on the importance of discipline and responsibility.
Community leaders warned that continued unrest could disrupt the academic calendar and negatively affect performance in the forthcoming national examinations.
The cause of the fire at Tengecha Boys is now under investigation. Meanwhile, students have been relocated to alternative accommodation as the school management works to restore order.
