“These are Criminal Elements”: Kericho Governor Confirms Arrests After Litein Boys Unrest

Kericho Governor Dr. Eric Mutai has strongly condemned the destruction that occurred at Litein Boys High School on Sunday night, describing the events as a grave disappointment to the school community and the wider public.

Speaking as both the county chief and an alumnus of the institution, Dr. Mutai expressed dismay at the actions of students who went on a rampage after being denied an opportunity to watch a football match between Arsenal and Manchester City. “As an alumni, we have seen Litein Boys rising over the years to be the giant school that it is today. Yesterday’s events were a huge, monumental disappointment not only to me but to the people of Kericho and Kenya,” he said.

The unrest left behind significant destruction of school property, with reports of students damaging facilities worth millions of shillings. In a bizarre turn of events, some students allegedly rode a cow within the compound, treating it as though it were a horse.

Governor Mutai questioned the link between a football match and the wanton destruction of property, terming the incident the work of unruly individuals. “What is the relationship between a match and bringing down millions of properties of institutions and riding a cow like a horse? How did they come together? These are criminal elements,” he noted.

As of Monday morning, ten students had been arrested in connection with the chaos. Security officials confirmed that investigations were underway to establish the root cause of the riot and to hold the culprits accountable.

The governor urged parents, teachers, and community leaders to join hands in restoring discipline among learners, stressing that acts of hooliganism threaten not only the reputation of Kericho’s schools but also the future of the students involved.
