The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into a disturbing case in which a 17-year-old student was allegedly assaulted by police officers while in custody at Naroosura Police Station in Narok South Sub-County.
According to preliminary reports, the teenager had been arrested earlier this week on suspicion of stealing tractor spare parts from a local farm.
While being held at the police station, the minor allegedly endured severe physical assault at the hands of officers. The student was later rushed to the Narok County Referral Hospital, where he remains admitted in critical condition.
In a statement released on Friday, October 24, IPOA confirmed that it had opened a formal inquiry into the incident, promising a thorough and impartial investigation.
The authority emphasized its commitment to upholding justice and protecting the rights of all citizens, including minors.
“In line with its mandate to ensure accountability and the observance of human rights in policing, IPOA is investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged arrest and subsequent injury of the minor,” the oversight body said.
IPOA noted that its investigators have already been dispatched to Narok to collect evidence, interview witnesses, and record statements from both the victim’s family and the officers involved.
The findings will determine whether any police officers at Naroosura Police Station violated the law during the student’s detention and interrogation.
Residents of Naroosura have expressed outrage over the alleged incident, calling for swift action and justice for the victim.
Human rights activists in the region have also condemned what they described as “a blatant case of police brutality,” urging IPOA to ensure accountability and transparency throughout the investigation process.
Police brutality and misconduct cases have remained a major concern in Kenya, with several similar incidents reported in recent years.
IPOA, established in 2011, has been instrumental in investigating such cases to ensure that officers who abuse their authority face legal consequences.
As the investigation continues, IPOA has assured the public that it will pursue the matter to its conclusion and make its findings public.
Meanwhile, the student’s family is appealing for prayers and justice as their son continues to receive treatment at the Narok County Referral Hospital.
