Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has proposed that President William Ruto should invite English Premier League giants Arsenal to play against Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, once the Talanta Stadium is completed.
Speaking during the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Bondo, Wanga said the friendly match would be a fitting tribute to the late leader, who was a passionate supporter of Arsenal Football Club.
She noted that Raila’s deep love for football and his loyalty to the London-based club made him a unifying figure in sports and politics alike.
“Raila Odinga was not just a political icon but also a true football enthusiast. He never missed Arsenal’s matches and often spoke fondly of the team.
It would be a great honour if President Ruto could invite Arsenal to play Harambee Stars in his memory when Talanta Stadium is ready,” Wanga said.
Her remarks were met with applause from mourners, many of whom recalled Raila’s long association with Kenyan sports.
The proposal has since drawn interest online, with fans suggesting that such a match would symbolize national unity and celebrate Raila’s enduring legacy beyond politics.
