Dramatic Scene in Kitale as Saboti MP Aspirant Pepela Threatens Wetang’ula’s Aide With Pistol

Tensions flared in Kitale on Saturday, September 21, after a confrontation involving National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s protocol officer, Ben Juma, and Saboti parliamentary aspirant Joseph Pepela. The incident occurred at a popular club in Kitale, where Pepela was meeting former Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa.

According to witnesses and videos obtained by Jobsnews.co.ke, the exchange quickly escalated. Wamalwa, who had accompanied Pepela, was seen brandishing his gun after Juma allegedly confronted and threatened the aspirant. The footage shows people in the venue rushing to restrain Wamalwa, preventing him from opening fire as panic spread among those present.

Despite the heated situation, Juma stood his ground, repeatedly telling Wamalwa, “Chris, we are not fighting.” He emphasized that he had no personal conflict with Wamalwa, but accused Pepela of openly disrespecting FORD Kenya party leader Moses Wetang’ula. The standoff, however, highlighted the growing friction within the political circles of Trans Nzoia County as the 2027 election season begins to take shape.

Chris Wamalwa, a former close ally of Wetang’ula, has himself been entangled in local political rivalries, with his support now directed toward Pepela’s bid for the Saboti seat. Analysts say the incident exposes underlying power struggles in the region, particularly within FORD Kenya, which holds significant influence in Trans Nzoia.

Police had not issued an official statement on the matter by Sunday morning, though questions are being raised about the handling of firearms by public figures during political disagreements. The scenes of Wamalwa waving his gun have sparked debate on security protocols and the potential dangers of political disputes spilling into public spaces.

The confrontation has since become the talk of Kitale, with residents urging leaders to settle their differences peacefully as campaigns gradually take shape ahead of 2027.
