The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has appointed Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga as the interim party leader following the death of his younger brother, Raila Odinga.
In a statement released on Thursday morning, ODM announced that the decision was reached unanimously during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held earlier in the day.
“The National Executive Committee (NEC) has this morning met and unanimously endorsed the designation of the Senator of Siaya County, Dr. Oburu Oginga, as the Acting Party Leader. This appointment takes effect immediately,” the statement read.
Dr. Oburu, a seasoned politician and one of the founding members of ODM, will temporarily steer the party as it navigates the difficult transition period following Raila’s death in India. His appointment is seen as a move to ensure stability and continuity within the party, which has long been synonymous with Raila’s leadership.
ODM members and supporters have expressed confidence in Dr. Oburu’s ability to uphold the party’s ideals and safeguard the legacy of his late brother, who dedicated decades to Kenya’s democratic struggle.
The party is expected to hold a national convention in the coming months to chart its future direction.
