Babu Owino has broken his silence over the suspension of Hon. Anthony Kibagendi, MP for Kitutu Chache South, condemning the action as arbitrary and politically motivated.
Owino described the charges against Kibagendi as baseless, frivolous and designed to tarnish his reputation unfairly.
In his statement, the outspoken MP accused parliamentary leadership of targeting Kibagendi without due process, saying the conduct undermines democratic principles and the rights of elected representatives.
“We strongly condemn the arbitrary suspension of Hon. Anthony Kibagendi MP Kitutu Chache South from Parliament,” Owino said, adding that the action sets a worrying precedent for legislative accountability.
Owino argued that the allegations against Kibagendi are unsubstantiated and political, aimed at silencing his voice rather than addressing genuine misconduct.
He called on parliamentary authorities to provide transparency on how the decision was reached, emphasizing that MPs must be held to fair and consistent standards.
The Embu lawmaker rejected claims that Kibagendi’s behaviour warranted suspension, saying the punitive decision lacked credible evidence and ignored due process safeguards.
“We demand the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of this hardworking MP,” Owino stated, insisting that Kibagendi was elected to serve his constituents without fear of arbitrary disciplinary action.
According to Owino, the suspension has robbed the residents of Kitutu Chache South of effective representation at a time when critical national debates are underway.
The turbulent political climate has seen increased tensions within Parliament, with lawmakers frequently clashing over ethics, accountability, and party interests.
Owino’s intervention adds to mounting pressure from some quarters demanding a review of Kibagendi’s suspension, with critics warning that the action could erode public confidence in parliamentary fairness.
Political analysts say the matter could escalate if unresolved, potentially triggering legal challenges or sparking wider debate across political divides.
Supporters of Kibagendi have rallied on social media, condemning what they describe as injustice and political victimization.
Parliament has yet to issue a detailed response to Owino’s statement, and efforts to reach parliamentary leadership for comment were not immediately successful.
The situation continues to unfold as politicians and constituents alike await clarity on Kibagendi’s parliamentary status and the next steps in the dispute.
