Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has accused a government official of orchestrating the killing of a bodaboda rider in Kisumu. The MP claimed the victim, George Olwande, was murdered for supporting his political activities.
In a statement on Sunday, Owino said, “Yesterday, PS Raymond Omolo sent goons who attacked and killed George Olwande, a bodaboda rider in Kisumu. The only mistake he committed was to support me.”
Owino called on authorities to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice. He described the killing as politically motivated, targeting ordinary citizens for their political affiliations.
Residents of Kisumu expressed shock over the attack. Many condemned the alleged involvement of state actors, describing the situation as alarming and a threat to citizens’ safety and democratic freedoms.
The MP urged calm while calling for justice. He said political support should never be met with violence and reiterated the importance of protecting citizens’ constitutional rights to support leaders of their choice.
Family members of George Olwande confirmed his death and mourned the loss. They described him as a hardworking bodaboda rider who had been quietly supporting Owino’s political campaigns in the region.
Owino extended condolences to the family, saying, “May his soul rest in eternal peace,” while warning that such attacks would not intimidate him or his supporters from participating in politics.
Human rights activists condemned the killing, noting that violence against citizens for political allegiance undermines democracy. They called for an independent probe to ensure accountability and prevent further politically motivated attacks.
Police have not yet released a statement regarding the alleged involvement of PS Raymond Omolo. Observers noted the need for urgent investigations to prevent escalation of politically charged violence in Kisumu.
The incident highlights rising concerns over political intimidation in western Kenya, particularly targeting supporters of opposition leaders. Analysts warn that unresolved cases could further polarize communities ahead of upcoming elections.
Owino’s statement underscores the risks ordinary citizens face when engaging in political activity. He vowed to continue advocating for justice while urging authorities to uphold law and order.
The political environment in Kisumu remains tense, with local leaders calling for restraint. Citizens and political actors are urged to avoid reprisals and allow investigations to determine the facts behind Olwande’s killing.
