The motorcade of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale stopped at the scene of a serious road accident Sunday afternoon at Otonglo near the Molasses Plant along the busy Kisumu–Busia highway.
The Cabinet Secretary was travelling from Rarieda to Kisumu International Airport when the motorcade encountered the accident scene, prompting an immediate halt to coordinate emergency rescue efforts.
Witnesses said the CS quickly mobilised emergency medical assistance after assessing the situation, directing members of his security team and nearby responders to prioritise evacuation of injured victims who were trapped and critically wounded.
More than 19 injured people were rescued from the wreckage and rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, the region’s main referral facility, where doctors and emergency teams immediately began administering urgent treatment.
Authorities confirmed that two people died on the spot due to the severity of their injuries sustained during the collision, which occurred along the busy highway that connects Kisumu to western border towns.
Another victim later succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital, raising the death toll to three as medical teams continued treating other survivors who suffered fractures, deep cuts, and trauma.
Emergency responders, police officers, and members of the public worked together at the chaotic scene to clear the wreckage, rescue survivors, and restore traffic flow along the highway that had briefly been paralysed.
Medical teams at the referral hospital reported that several victims were admitted for observation, while others were undergoing emergency procedures as doctors raced against time to stabilise the most critical cases.
Officials from the Ministry of Health later confirmed that the Cabinet Secretary remained briefly at the scene to ensure the injured were evacuated and that emergency services had been effectively mobilised.
In a statement released later, the Ministry of Health conveyed condolences to families who lost their loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to those receiving treatment following the tragic road accident.
