Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has launched a sharp attack on President William Ruto, dismissing remarks about his lifestyle and eating habits as petty and misplaced.
Speaking in Kisii, Matiang’i questioned why the Head of State appeared concerned about what he eats, insisting his personal life should not be a subject of national debate.
“I do not know why you’re bothered about how I eat, yet I do not eat at your wife’s place,” he said, drawing cheers from supporters.
In a mix of English and Kiswahili, Matiang’i fired back: “Ruto, mbona unasumbuka na vile ninakula? Mimi nakula ndizi na ugali kule kwetu Kisii; mbona sijakuja kukuuliza kwa nini unakonda?”
The former powerful Interior CS framed his remarks as a response to what he termed unnecessary personal attacks, arguing that leaders should focus on the country’s economic struggles instead of trading jibes over appearances.
His comments come amid rising political temperatures, with allies of President Ruto previously taking subtle swipes at Matiang’i’s public image and political ambitions.
Without directly stating his next political move, Matiang’i’s tone signaled a man unwilling to stay silent as succession politics slowly gather momentum.
He accused the current administration of deflecting from real issues affecting Kenyans, including the high cost of living, unemployment and heavy taxation.
Political observers say the exchange reflects widening cracks between President Ruto and figures perceived to be consolidating influence ahead of future elections.
Matiang’i served as Interior Cabinet Secretary under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, where he built a reputation as a firm and no-nonsense administrator.
His latest remarks are likely to escalate tensions within the political landscape, especially in regions considered key battlegrounds.
For now, the war of words underscores a broader contest for political relevance, with both camps keen to shape public perception in a climate already charged with economic anxiety.
