The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is today holding its national elections to choose a new President, Vice-President, and Council members, marking the end of the two-year term of outgoing President Faith Odhiambo.
Voting began at 8:00 a.m. and will close at 5:00 p.m., with advocates cast their ballots across designated polling centres countrywide. The exercise is expected to shape the direction of the legal profession for the next two years.
The LSK elections are closely watched within legal and political circles, given the society’s influential role in defending constitutionalism, human rights, and the rule of law. The incoming leadership will inherit a docket filled with weighty national issues.
During her tenure, Odhiambo steered the society through high-profile constitutional debates, public interest litigation, and sharp engagements with State agencies. Her administration often took firm positions on governance and accountability matters.
Candidates seeking the presidency have campaigned on platforms centred on professional welfare, reforms within the judiciary, and protection of advocates’ independence. They have also promised to strengthen internal governance structures within the society.
The Vice-President and Council positions have equally attracted competitive races, reflecting heightened interest among members in influencing policy and strategic decisions. Council members play a critical oversight and advisory role in the society’s operations.
LSK officials overseeing the poll have assured members of a transparent and credible process. Voting is being conducted through a secure system designed to safeguard integrity and prevent irregularities.
Observers note that the outcome could significantly influence how the legal body engages with key institutions, including the Judiciary of Kenya and Parliament, especially amid ongoing debates on reforms and accountability.
Results are expected to be announced after the close of voting and verification of ballots. The new leadership will assume office immediately, tasked with steering the society through emerging legal and constitutional challenges.
