The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory warning of rains across Central Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, and the Coast region.
Moderate rains are expected at the start of the week, with intensity increasing from Thursday. Isolated heavy rainfall events are likely in parts of these regions, posing risks for flooding in low-lying areas.
Counties in the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Western Kenya likely to be affected include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, and Baringo,
Similar rain patterns are expected in Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok counties.
Central region residents should prepare for heavy downpours, with Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi forecasted to experience intermittent showers.
In the Highland East, morning rains are expected over a few areas, while afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms may occasionally spread to several locations, Kenya Met said in its advisory.
Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, along with the Tana Delta, are likely to experience scattered showers throughout morning, afternoon, and night periods.
While most parts of the country face moderate to heavy rainfall, the northern counties of Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are expected to remain mostly sunny and dry throughout the week.
Temperatures across the rainy regions are predicted to remain moderate, providing relief from extreme heat. Residents are advised to carry umbrellas and exercise caution during thunderstorms.
The department urged motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant, particularly in flood-prone and slippery road areas, as heavy rains could affect visibility and road conditions.
Fishermen along Lake Victoria and the coastal belt are also advised to monitor weather updates closely, as sudden showers and strong winds may pose safety risks.
Kenya Met continues to monitor evolving weather patterns and will update the public regularly to mitigate potential hazards caused by the predicted rains.
