The Kenya National Examinations Council has released detailed instructions for Kenyans wishing to sit the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) as private candidates.
The guide targets adult learners above 24 years and repeaters seeking to improve previous grades. Registration must be done at Sub-County Directors of Education (SCDE) offices with proof of prior KCSE participation for repeaters.
Full repeaters register under Entry Code 2 and must take seven or more subjects. Partial repeaters use Entry Code 3 to retake one to six subjects previously sat for, without introducing new subjects.
Theory and practical papers are administered at county headquarters. Project work is handled at designated sub-county institutions, with only one private centre allowed per sub-county for projects.
Candidates must provide a National ID, passport, or birth certificate. Foreign applicants need an alien card or equivalence documents. Those awaiting IDs must show proof of application.
Eligibility includes holding a KCPE, EACE, KCE, or recognized foreign certificate with KNEC equivalence. Primary certificate holders must pass the KCSE Qualifying Test. A three-year gap after primary education is required.
Applicants must download the private candidate registration form from the KNEC website and complete it before visiting SCDE offices. Registration confirmation and verification of details are mandatory.
The examination fee is KSh 7,200 and must be paid online via e-Citizen at registration. No registration is accepted without payment.
Candidates repeating all subjects are assigned regular index numbers, while partial repeaters get index numbers ending in 501, 502, etc., receiving supplementary slips for the repeated subjects.
All candidates must report to their SCDE to sign the nominal roll after registration closes. Verification ensures correct personal and examination details.
The guide is timely as Kenya phases out the 8-4-4 system under Competence-Based Education, allowing adult learners and repeaters to secure their final KCSE grades before the transition.
